Call for Proposals- 2017 Visual Research Conference

The Visual Research Conference will take place in Washington, DC this year, November 27-29 at the beginning of the American Anthropological Association meeting. An informal no-host dinner takes place on Monday night and interactive presentations take place all day Tuesday and until 3pm on Wednesday. The Visual Research Conference provides an opportunity for professionals and students to dialogue about visually engaged works-in-progress. There are no specific themes to follow, though we are most interested in new ideas and projects under development in the study of visual signification, visual communication, and visual forms of representation, and/or utilizing visual media (photo, film, web, polymedia, intermedia, multimodal media). Forty minute time slots allow for substantive presentations that include viewing of visual material as well as ample give-and-take with an actively participating audience. Further discussion takes place during poster presentations. Many informal discussion periods between the interactive formal presentations, plus conversations at lunch and dinner, create multiple situations for networking and exchange of ideas. Members and non-members of the American Anthropological Association and Society for Visual Anthropology are welcome and there is no charge to attend. This is a productive way to meet and interact with others who do anthropological and anthropologically-related visual research.

Abstracts of approximately 250-500 words can be submitted through 11:59pm, Hawai’i Time, March 26, 2017 by clicking on the Visual Research Conference submission form link HERE.

PLEASE NOTE: this Visual Research Conference submission deadline on March 26 is EARLIER than the American Anthropological Association’s Annual Meeting submission deadline on April 14, so that the Visual Research Conference organizing committee has time to carefully review the submissions and invite the 2017 presenters.

Lyon – Cinéma et anthropologie – Invitation projection-débat / 1er mars à 16h

L’association Tillandsia a le plaisir de vous inviter au second épisode de son cycle “Cinéma et anthropologie” à l’université Lyon 2 (Maison de l’étudiant, campus de Bron) le mercredi 1er mars à partir de 16h.
Au programme :
“Tchoumpa ! Les enfants du tourisme”, réalisé par Alexandre Bonche , et “Cannibal Tour” de Dennis O’Rourke.

Ces films qui abordent le tourisme sous différents angles, interrogent la représentation de l’autre, et de soi-même comme un autre; problématique commune au cinéma et à l’anthropologie.

Nous avons le plaisir d’accueillir Alexandre Bonche, réalisateur et anthropologue, (http://a.bonche.free.fr) et Pascale-Marie Milan, doctorante en anthropologie à Lyon 2 et spécialiste du tourisme.
°° “Tchoumpa ! Les enfants du tourisme” (Alexandre Bonche, 30min, FR) :
Depuis la découverte de l’altérité, les ethnologues s’intéressent aux cultures des autres. Toutefois, leurs recherches ne sont pas sans influence sur les peuples “ethnologisés”. Actuellement, l’économie touristique utilise les descriptions des ethnologues pour représenter le peuple dogon selon une image d’authenticité et de tradition, répondant ainsi à la demande des voyageurs en quête de consommation symbolique d’identité.
Face à cette nouvelle donne, apparaît la communauté de guides touristiques qui incite à s’interroger sur le tourisme “exotique”.

Des touristes européens et américains font une croisière en Nouvelle-Guinée à la rencontre, des Papous. Le film observe les villageois qui expriment leurs interrogations sur la curiosité de ces occidentaux, la perte de leurs traditions, leur déception devant l’argent qu’ils reçoivent.

Students’ Film Forum in Germany – Call for Entries

The students’ section of the Freiburger Film Forum is calling for entries!

We are one of the two big film festivals for ethnography and visual anthropology in Germany. Held biannually, the 31st edition of the Freiburger Film Forum is taking place in May 2017. The festival program is composed of inter- and sociocultural films. The Students’ Film Forum is part of the festival and offers a platform for up-and-coming filmmakers to discuss their recent film projects with experts in ethnography and film.

Students’ Film Forum I Call for Entries I Submission open until February, 20th!

For the second time the Freiburger Film Forum opens its auditorium to young talents: up-and-coming filmmakers get the chance to screen their first and final works during our festival week (May, 22 – 28). Since 1985 the Freiburger Film Forum’s program encompasses current productions from Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania as well as retrospectives of important filmmakers and issues. Cultural exchange and intensive discussions between audiences and special guests are hallmarks of the Freiburger Film Forum. The festival’s workshop-like character and intimate atmosphere lend it a special intensity and enable the type of discussions valued by filmmakers from all over the world.
